-Transferred Images-
Though my photographs are documentary in style, I create a different visual environment with the transfers than with traditional color prints.

The size, color, surface texture, image shape and presentation affect the intensity and intimacy of the image.

My own slides are the beginning step for my transfers. A slide is printed on Polaroid film in a device similar to a camera. For an image transfer, the exposed film packet is separated and the portion of the packet with emulsion on it is printed on watercolor paper or other appropriate surface. For the emulsion transfer, the exposed film packet is fully developed. In a water bath, the emulsion is floated off the card with the image on it and is transferred to a surface of my choice.

Slides may be reproduced as often as I wish but no two images are exactly alike. Each print is unique because it is affected by many variables including the amount of emulsion transferred, bonding, time and temperature. Multiple images may be printed on the same surface. Some images are made in a series; though the same slides are used to produce each series, variations will appear. Some images have supplemental color added by hand.

Meryl has a BA in Art History from the University of North Carolina and has been showing and winning awards in competitions since 1987.
